G300 Mild Steel
Grade 300 hot rolled carbon steel is now what we mean when we talk about "mild steel." Widely available in many thicknesses and sizes, it has eclipsed G250 and is fine for most things unless you have specific strength or weathering requirements.
G350 Mild Steel
Grade 350 hot rolled carbon steel starts to rear its head in structural applications where more tensile strength is more better. It's not too much more expensive than G300, but we don't have it in as many thicknesses.
G250 Mild Steel
Grade 250 hot rolled carbon steel used to be the most-commonly used steel for general purpose applications. In recent years, however, it has fallen out of favour and has become harder to find. As such, we only have a couple thicknesses available in G250. Grade 300 is where you'll find most everything steel!
Corten HW350
Corten is widely used in outdoor and architectural applications in New Zealand and beyond. Instead of rusting right through like normal carbon steel, corten is a special alloy that forms a protective and self-sealing rust layer (similar to the way aluminium oxidises). It's also got higher tensile strength than other mild steel.
Stainless Steel, Grade 304, 2B finish
Stainless steel has many desirable properties that make it a go-to material for quite a few industries. Grade 304 is appropriate for most applications, especially if you're not near the sea. 2B finish is a standard matte finish that's the starting point for many other finishing processes, and it can also be left as-is. If you're looking for something thicker, choose #1 finish!
Stainless Steel, Grade 304, #1 finish
Stainless steel has many desirable properties that make it a go-to material for quite a few industries. Grade 304 is appropriate for most applications, especially if you're not near the sea. #1 finish is a mill finish that's the only way most thicker stainless is available, and it's a fairly rough finish. Thinner stainless is available in a wider variety of finishes.
Stainless Steel, Grade 304, #4 finish
Stainless steel has many desirable properties that make it a go-to material for quite a few industries. #4 is an attractive brushed finish that can save you heaps of time compared to buying 2B finish and brushing it out yourself.
Stainless Steel, Grade 316, 2B finish
Stainless steel has many desirable properties that make it a go-to material for quite a few industries. Grade 316 is more expensive than 304, but it's required if you're near the sea or if your application involves rougher environments like chemical exposure.
Aluminium, Commercial Grade, 5005/5052
Aluminium is lightweight, strong, foldable, and weldable, making it a desirable choice for many high-performance applications. We carry many thicknesses of commercial grade alloy, and the line between 5005 and 5052 sits around 3mm. We tend to not distinguish between these two grades in our day-to-day usage, but please let us know if you application requires a specific grade.
Aluminium, Marine Grade, 5083
Grade 5083, commonly known as marine grade, is better in harsh environments than other commonly-available grades, but it's also not nearly as foldable as other grades. Most of our thicker aluminium is 5083 as our boatie customers prefer it.
Plywood
We stock pretty general-purpose plywood. It's non-pressure-treated and is great for making all sorts of things around the home or jobsite. If you have specific thickness or grade requirements and you don't see it here, just sing out. We don't stock too many variants as there are almost too many to keep track of.
Brass
Beautiful and expensive, brass is used in cosmetic and engineering applications. We tend not to carry too many thicknesses because we don't have piles of money.
